Hot rolled sheet
Hot rolling processes use heat to soften steel or other metals and then change its shape or dimensions by passing the heated metal through the rollers of the rolling machine. This process occurs at a temperature higher than the metal’s recrystallization temperature, where the metal grains are arranged and deform more easily. The rollers of the rolling mill may be arranged in various shapes to form the metal into desired shapes such as sheets, bars, and profiles.
Steps of hot rolling operation
- Preparation of materials
At this stage, the required metal materials are selected. Materials such as steel, aluminum or copper, which are often prepared in the form of billets or large ingots and are ready to be heated.
- Heating and preparation of materials
The selected billets or ingots reach a temperature higher than the recrystallization point in a furnace called a preheating furnace and obtain the desired flexibility. Automatic furnaces are such that after the used ingots or billets enter the furnace, they move inside it and reach the appropriate temperature by the time they reach the end of it. After that, they are removed from the furnace by the ejector.
- Peeling
In this step, descaling removes the scales created on the metal in various ways. The effective removal of shells during the hot rolling process is of great importance for the quality of steel
- Rolling operation
A rolling stand is used to roll the dehulled ingot or billet. In this way, the heated ingot or billet passes through the rollers whose distance is less than the diameter of the metal. The movement between the rollers changes the shape and reduces the thickness of the metal and prepares the product for the final stage.
- Thickness measurement, bending and cooling
After the metal is rolled, we measure it with a thickness gauge and remove the possibility of warping with a warping device. After that, we put the part into the cooling line and cool it with different methods. After finishing the rolling operation, the final product is cut into desired sizes and rolled automatically.
Advantages of hot rolling
- Plasticity
- Improvement of mechanical properties
- Economical production
